Character History

Nathaniel is the Lord of Medoria; a land he inherited from his father, and has maintained it with a firm, though not harsh, grip. Generally this has involved keeping the nobles relatively satisfying, so that they will not turn their considerable power against him.

His late wife – the Lady Lucille – was one of them. It had been an arranged marriage, and his father manipulated events so that they would meet by “chance.” Nathaniel, still young, and not quite so manipulative himself, had grown bored and left a meeting. Lucille had simply been told to leave while they had “important discussions.”

They fell in love; something which took the sting off the manipulation – although it was one of the man things which kept him from ever growing close to his father. He did learn a lot from his father, however, including the basics for how to manipulate someone. And he learned from his Father’s mistakes – Greggory was always too quick to make threats; and Nathaniel has always secretly suspected it has something to do with why his father took a trip to the wastelands one day – and never came back. Perhaps even why his mother had been killed some years earlier.

Regardless, Nathaniel chose to be more subtle – he keeps people appeased; and while he manipulates others, he avoids threats, and doesn’t bother to hide his manipulative nature – he finds it both more exciting to get around their anticipation, and safer than trying to pretend.

Despite his attempts, however, his wife died. Nathaniel is relatively certain that this was a rogue, unplanned killing by a local - though it did somewhat harden him. He’d had many “many night stands,” but no actual relationships since.

With love apparently out of the picture, he shifted towards trying to take control. Between spending his own past manipulated, and losing his wife in a situation he couldn’t control, power became much more important to him. He started to crave it – it showed up in his work, in the bedroom – and it arguably made him a more effective leader. It did not, however, make him an easier person to know.

It was at some point during this which he began to explore other worlds; to his mind, in order to remain the best leader, he needed to make not only his nobles, but his people happy. In order to make the people happy, he needed more land – both to physically fit his long lived people, and to grow enough food to properly support them. To get more land, he needed them to leave the waste covered Medoria – to find a new home. To conquer a new world.

He’s still considering the precise manner to go about it, or whether to do it at all; he wants to avoid bloodshed, and the expenses of war – all he knows so far is that if he did it, it would be quick, and efficient, preferably through somewhat official means.

Most of his work is with people – visitors to Medoria, who will spread tales, and nobles who must be appeased. The rest of the time, he’s often occupied with simple mundane paperwork.

[IC]
This is the permissions list for IC (in-character), activity.
Answer the following questions with "yes" or "no", as well as additional information if desired. With IC permissions, it's a good idea to elaborate on what other players can expect from your character if they choose to do any of the following:

Hugging this character: He'll be surprised, but feel free
Kissing this character: Definitely feel free! (If you're not female, though, he might react poorly)
Flirting with this character: See above!
Fighting with this character: If there's a reason.
Injuring this character (include limits and severity): I'd prefer no death, as a general rule. Otherwise, go forth!
Killing this character: Not without some serious discussion.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Please ask. Nathaniel would be quite annoyed at it - and it's likely he'd immediately start working on ways to avoid this in the future.

Warnings: Beware Nathaniel. He's a manipulative bugger at the best of times, and he has a tendency to press buttons.

Pod-Person

To say Nathaniel was surprised by the alert was... less than accurate. The person had apparently crashed through one of the thicker dimensional walls, something quite rare in and of itself. Stranger yet had been the device she'd done it in - a metal pod... not, so far as anyone could tell, at all designed for the journey it had taken. It had crashed straight through into the wasteland.

His soldiers had cleared the area quickly. They had escorted him out to it. Now they stood a respectful distance away as their leader frowned at the device. He gripped a pebble and casually tossed it forward toward the pod. With a small expenditure of power, he made the knock far louder than it should have been.

The World of Medoria:

Medoria is a bubble universe, located within our own; cracked and broken, with some patches of extremely fertile land, and others of mere dessert, the world is split between the wealthy and the not - the strong, and the weak.

More specifically, it has developed something akin to a breeding program - the family's with the strongest magic claimed the best land; over time, they in turn killed or took in anyone else of strength, giving birth to children of even greater strength, and so on and so on, eventually becoming the noble lines that now populate Medoria at large. The Meladacs are one of the oldest lines, and as such is generally seen as being connected - through some means or another - to each of the other family's.

Those who do not have good land generally eek out an existence serving those who do, and as such they have maintained a small but effective population, which has grown in magic strength over the eons.

Recently (or not so recently, perhaps) Nathaniel has set his eyes on growth, with the intent to take his men and conquer the larger world outside their own bubble universe, breeding with anything of strong enough magic; though he seems to view those without magic as lesser, he has expressed a direct intent not to commit genocide. (To paraphrase him - if you kill everyone, they'll fight until their last breath; if you kill a few of them, and promise the rest peace, relative safety, and a mere changing of hands in terms of who holds privilege in their lives... they'll eventually give in, and even convince themselves that your system is the better.)

The Magic of Medoria:

The magic of medoria is split into groups - each child has a specialty, sometimes detectable at birth (more often showing itself only in later years.) Though there are lists of basic spells which any magic user can manage, generally more complex spells can only be done by those specializing in them.
  • The specialties include (but are not limited to)
  • Messengers
  • Travelers
  • Alterationists
  • Sorcerers (who merely take the simpler spells and make them more complex and powerful)
  • Healers,
  • Cursers (often seen as a subset of Sorcerers)
  • Weapons
  • Shields
  • and Nullers - who can take down any magic in the area.

Many of these branches in turn have subbranches (or twigs.) What weapons a weapon maker is best with. Whether a Shield can better protect themselves or others (generally splitting them into Warriors, or Bodyguards.) Whereas the main branches often seem to connected to personality, the secondary branches are generally connected as much to training as anything else - with the possible exception of shields. (It takes a certain level of altruism to try and protect everyone from most attacks, instead of just protecting yourself from all attacks.)

Magic in general tends to burn through callories quickly; some branches - who's power requires continuous use of energy - feel this affect more than others. (Someone who fires a single firebolt every time they activate their powers, for example, uses up much less energy than a Shield, who must keep their barriers up constantly.)

Side note: Many if not all branches have larger, grander names... however, they are generally used only within groupings of people who hold those branches. (Those who hold other branches are as likely to use derogatory nicknames, by contrast.) Most, however, content themselves with a simplistic description.
